Treadmill Maintenance

Treadmills are expensive pieces of equipment with moving parts, so poor maintenance would cause more damage than it repairs. Every treadmill is designed differently and hence, for the best maintenance, it would be best to refer to the manual supplied with it.

Even a simple thing like dust accumulation may be a deterrent for the smooth movement of the conveyor. About once a week, the treadmill should be dusted all over. Special attention must be paid to areas under the belt, and any accumulation there should be dusted off.

There are several treadmill maintenance kits available in the market. They are mostly silicone-based. These kits may be used, after dusting, on moving parts such as the belt, the deck and the motor. A few drops of lubrication fluid through a convenient dropper help in maintaining lubrication in these parts of the machine and reduces the friction. But, a word of caution! Use these kits only if recommended by the manufacturers. Using the wrong type of liquid on a treadmill may make the belt too slippery, and make it lose its grip. There may be other problems these may create with the incline. Generally treadmill manufacturers also manufacture their own treadmill maintenance kits. Instead of using commercial kits, one can also use any other non-abrasive, non-acidic cleaner fluid with equal impact.

Waxing the deck must be avoided unless specifically mentioned in the treadmill manual. Many treadmill manufacturers have their own coatings on the belt for grip. Waxing them may just make the surface gummier and make it lose its grip.

There are little things that must be done regularly, like wiping the console and the handrails with a damp cloth, keeping the deck clean, etc. Do not use wet cloths on the console. As in any electronic device, grounding is necessary. An AC power supply with grounding would prevent the digital parts of the treadmill from crashing. A loss in the artificial intelligence of the treadmill may translate into loss of inclines and speeds, and may also render the treadmill totally dysfunctional.

However heavy the treadmill may be, with time it moves a little. There may be changes in the belt, which may gradually move on one side. About once a month, the belt must be realigned with the center. Belt tracking is also done if the belt falls loose and begins to sag. But be careful that you do not tighten the belt too much.

The treadmill itself may move over time and lose its level with the floor. This may cause squeaking noises while the belt is in motion. Adjust the treadmill regularly for its horizontality.

These simple maintenance procedures can be done by the users themselves. It is not necessary to contract professionals for maintenance and pay their heavy bills. However, for more complicated things like a blown fuse or component replacement, it is best to approach the company.

Review: Are ProForm Treadmills a Good Value?

ProForm is the largest seller of treadmills in the world. They focus on budget models and sell through mass merchants, large sporting good chains and the home shopping networks. ProForm is owned by Icon Fitness. In addition to selling ProForm fitness equipment, they also sell Weslo, Nordic Track, Reebok, Image and HealthRider. ProForm along with the other Icon brands dominate the sub $1,000 market.

We know that ProForm offers an attractive price, with treadmills selling as low as $400. The question is, are they a good value? From strictly a price perspective they are an excellent value. When you factor in durability and maintenance, their value may come into question.

Why are ProForm treadmills so popular?

When you compare the price and features, ProForm treadmills appear to be an exceptional deal. Most have numerous bells and whistle, including built-in televisions. And from an outward appearance they appear to be a substantial machine, but it is what is under the hood that is most important.

The majority of ProForm treadmills come with a 90 day parts and labor warranty. Now what does that say about their products? I find treadmill warranties very revealing. It would seem apparent that treadmill companies using inexpensive components would offer short-term warranties. In contrast, those manufacturers that build durable treadmills can afford to offer extended warranties, like 2-5 years on the parts and 1 year labor. Although it should be mentioned that ProForm is now offering a 12-15 year motor warranty on select models.

Recently I was at a fitness specialty store in Wilmington, NC, and was talking to the person in charge of servicing. Although this particular retailer did not sell ProForm, they often service them. He mentioned they were considering discontinuing service on the ProForm treadmills. The problem was once they fixed one problem often the owners would soon came back with the same problem or another service issue.

It should be noted that there are literally tens of thousands of ProForm treadmills sold every year, and the majority of owners are satisfied with their purchase (See http://www.epinions.com for customer reviews). Furthermore, Consumer Reports rated one of the ProForm treadmills as “Very Good” for quality. But it is a numbers game, and whereby other brands may have a minute percentage of mechanical problems, you can expect that percentage to be higher for budget treadmills. When you sell treadmills at budget prices you have to use budget components, and on average those treadmills are more likely to breakdown.

I recommend ProForm treadmills for primarily walking and moderate use. Their high-end models can probably handle light jogging. But if you plan to use the treadmill on a frequent basis, or have multiple users, you may want to consider other brands in the $1,500+ price range.

If your budget is tight, at least spend in excess of $700 for a ProForm Treadmill, and I highly recommend you put out a few extra dollars for an extended warranty. Treadmill repairs can potentially be costly.

For those that have a limited budget ProForm may be your best bet, but as the saying goes, “You get what you pay for.”

The History And Features Of Home Treadmills

Home treadmills are very popular fitness machines that have improved dramatically over the last 20 years. They come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and price ranges, so most people can find a suitable home treadmill regardless of their budget.

The history of treadmills, though, goes back farther than you might think. Would you believe that the first treadmills appeared in 1875? It’s true, and they have been evolving and changing ever since.

The Beginnings of Home Treadmills

The first “home” treadmills were invented for use by animals, not people. They came about as farmers found themselves needing agricultural equipment that was portable enough to be used in different locations around their land and powerful enough to perform the job for which they were intended.

The solution was a machine powered by the motion of an animal walking. Treadmills were constructed for many different purposes and in many different sizes, depending on the animal that was going to provide the power. For example, there were butter churners that functioned with a sheep (or even a dog) providing the power via a treadmill. Other larger machines included threshing machines used in the fields and powered by horses or mules.

So how did treadmills get from the farm to the family room? The first inklings of this transformation occurred in 1952 when a doctor at the University of Washington, located in Seattle, invented a treadmill that could be used for medical purposes. Specifically, the medical treadmill was used to test patients for heart and lung disease, and evaluate the severity of their conditions.

In the 1960′s the fitness equipment industry began to blossom, and home treadmills were among the first machines developed and promoted by several manufacturers. Each promoted themselves as having the best treadmill on the market, but the reality was that each different machine inevitably had its own strengths and weaknesses. Some of the earliest manufacturers included Finland’s Tunturi as well as Aerobics, Inc. in the United States. Interestingly, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) contributed a great deal to the technology and mechanics of treadmills because they saw treadmills as an excellent way for astronauts to stay fit while in space for extended periods of time. NASA developed several versions that were used aboard the orbiting Skylab station in the 1970′s.

Construction and Technology Changes

Early home treadmills were large and required quite a bit of space in the home. They were manually operated and controlled, meaning that the user’s own motion was the driving force that kept the treadmill in motion. As technology advanced throughout the 1980′s and 1990′s, more advanced home treadmills began to appear on the market. These machines included advancements such as motorized tracks, motorized incline adjustment, electronic controls, programmable workouts, and most importantly to many people, compact versions that fit into smaller spaces. Now you can even get a wide width treadmill that allows you to walk your dog right alongside you while you exercise!

Basic Components

The basic components of home treadmills are important to understand and consider before you decide which brand and model to purchase. These basics are the foundation for the durability, reliability, and usability of your treadmill.

Motor – The size of the treadmill’s motor is important because it will affect overall performance of the machine. A motor that is too small will not provide sufficient power and will breakdown more quickly than a motor that is the correct size for the type of use your treadmill will receive. Most experts agree that the motor should be rated at minimum of 1.5 horsepower under continuous operation if you intend to use your treadmill for walking. If you plan to run, though, or if you weigh more than 180 pounds you should look for a motor that is 2.0 horsepower or more.

Belt – The belt should be durable and not prone to excessive wear. A two-ply or greater belt is best, because a single ply belt will simply wear out and need replacement too quickly. The belt should also be large enough to accommodate the length and width of your stride. The American Council on Exercise recommends a belt length of at least 49 inches, with 50 inches or more being even better, and a width of 18 inches or more.

Deck – The deck is important because it flexes when your foot strikes it, cushioning the impact and helping to prevent injuries like shin splints, back strain, and foot problems. Look for a deck that is at least

Nordic Track Treadmill Reviews

Nordic Track treadmills are a great way to exercise and give the whole body a great aerobic workout at the same time. It is also a lot more convenient that just running around a park or on the streets. If you use treadmill then you can do the same amount of exercise in the summer or in the middle of winter when the weather is bad and you would not usually want to go out or are unable to get out for a nice run. It also means that you can fit your exercise regiment into your timetable and not have to plan around it. A good treadmill is an essential piece of exercise equipment and a really good way to integrate your exercise into your daily schedule.

However, treadmills are not cheap and you need to know that you are getting the best one for your money. Even if you do not have a lot of money to spend on one there are still some good options as to which model you should consider buying. In fact, even in the lower priced treadmills there are some really good models and some really lousy models to choose from. Of course, if you do your research then you should be able to find out which is the best type for you to buy.

The best way to do this is to try to find some really good Nordic Track treadmill reviews that are not biased towards any particular type of machine. If you go into a store and ask which exercise machine or treadmill they think is the best then they will generally tell you that the machines that they sell are the best, but you can find reviews in magazines and on websites that are not directly selling the treadmills they are usually able to give a much more unbiased view. One of the best places to find these types of reviews is in the fitness and running magazines. They very often review the different Nordic track treadmills that are available and are able to test them thoroughly in order to provide unbiased Nordic Track treadmill reviews.

The other place that you could try to find them is on fitness websites. There are a lot of these and many of the larger ones have reviews where they have tested the machines and have not just relied on the data that is supplied by the manufacturer. Some websites do however review the machines that they are selling so it is a good idea to look through all of their treadmill recommendations in order to determine what they truly feel is the top Nordic Track treadmill. If you can find some good reviews then it can help you to make the decision in regards to which machine to buy a lot easier for you.

Best Treadmill Reviews Come From Customers Themselves

The best treadmill reviews often come from previous customers. Few machines beat a great treadmill for challenge and fun in a workout. The question, however, is how to find the best machine for your purchase money. When reviewing different makes and models, the sheer number can be a little staggering. To sort through the options and find the better rated machines, it’s smart to look at reviews.

Treadmill User Ratings Provide Insight

No one is more uniquely qualified to speak on how a treadmill performs over time than a person who is actually using it on a consistent basis. When customers have rated a machine well, you know it’s one of the better models to look at. When customers rate a machine they’re often looking at the factors you would consider. Some of the things they’ll review include durability, ease of use, how hard the machine is to put together and the comfort level of different treadmills. These are all very important factors to consider when looking at treadmill ratings and reviews for the best machines.

Listen to the Pros

When reviewing the ratings of treadmills prior to a purchase do, of course, listen to what the pros have to say and keep their suggestions in mind for the best machines. Pay heed, too, to companies they’ve rated high for quality, design and cutting-edge technology, but don’t count a machine out of the running if a bad review comes in from only one source.

If you’re looking for the best insight on ratings, the Internet is a great place to look for what past customers have had to say about a treadmill. They simply are better at speaking to how a machine performs months and even years after purchase. Do remember, however, that when reviewing treadmills, customers don’t always have the technical information. So a combination of both customer and pro reviews should help give a clearer picture.

Even if a machine is rated the best by pros and customers alike, remember it might not be the best for you. A treadmill should provide a challenge and lots of options for the beginner all the way to a seasoned user to truly be considered the best. Make sure what you’re buying matches your own needs, and set your own rating system if necessary to help sort out treadmills that don’t meet your expectation.

How To Repair Treadmills At Home

With increasing use of treadmills as fitness maintainer, their presence in the market has also increased. Several models of treadmills, from cheap, refurbished to the most expensive ones are available today. But like any other machine, treadmills too tend to get wear and tear. The more you use it, the more soon will its components get exhausted.

Almost all treadmills, after the expiry of its warranty period require much replacement and repair so that it keeps functioning well. Many people refrain from spending on repair and maintenance costs. Well, if your treadmill is of low quality, you surely wouldn’t be preferring to spend your precious money on a low grade machine. Instead you will be interested in buying a new model altogether. But if you have a treadmill of a reputed brand, you would surely like to spend money on refurbishing your treadmill. Equipment maintenance is very important for your treadmill at home. You need regular servicing of your exercising machine. If you are not finding time to get your treadmill repaired at a service center, then it becomes important for you to perform service on your own.

The important parts of your treadmill are the motor, the belt, the deck and the display screen. There are certain basic things that you should keep in mind while repairing your treadmill. You should start repairing your treadmill with its most important part, which is a motor.

Constant cleaning of the motor is necessary. This helps it to make dust free. Next to the motor comes the treadmill belt. You should always keep the track of your belt’s condition. If you are uncomfortable with it, you should replace it. There is another aspect to the cleaning process. You should constantly apply grease to the chain that supports the belt. Greasing it constantly will make the life of your treadmill’s chain longer. It is also very important for you to examine the deck of your treadmill regularly.

Lubricating your deck also forms an important part of a treadmill repairman exercise. As the treadmill becomes old and much used, the belt tends to lose its balance. After a certain period of time, the treadmill belts do not remain centered. They get tracked either towards the left or the right. This type of defect can be repaired at your home easily with a screw driver. A proper balance is important for good exercising.

Any machine has a tendency to make noise. The same is true with your treadmill. The more you use it, the more it will become noisy. These symptoms show that now is the time for you to refurbish the motor of your treadmill. But replacing a motor is not an easy task. You should be careful about the compatibility of the new motor that you are intending to use. Most of the treadmill manufacturing brands have in their offer the replacement of parts of their models that includes belt and motor.

If you have these company replacement offers with you, then you would save heavy repair expenses. Apart from the motor and the belt, you may also find a need to replace the display screen of your treadmill.

Treadmill Reviews-Find The Right Machine For You With The Right Reviews

There are so many treadmill makers today, it is necessary to read many treadmill reviews before deciding on the right one for you. Often times, these machines are a rather large investment for many people, and without deciding on the right one, you can watch your money go down the drain in a hurry.

While many treadmill reviews no doubt are biased as they want to sell you something, it is actually quite easy to find truthful, unbiased reviews. These will help you decide on your own which machine is best for your home and your health.

Most treadmill reviews are conducted following various guidelines such as comfort factor, quality and efficiency of performance, price range, warranty terms, advanced features such as console, wireless heart rate monitoring system, incline ratio and pre-programmed and customizable workout regimes.
After reading these reviews, you will probably have a good grasp on the best treadmills to at least focus on. Don’t stop there, however.

Always make sure to test out the machines that you’ve narrowed your search down to. No matter what somebody testing a certain treadmill has to say, it is always best to at least see it for yourself and find out which you like the feel of best.

Remember, treadmill reviews are simply a guideline; you need to be the ultimate judge. Yes, treadmill reviews will generally give you a list of good machines to start with, but that’s all they are-a starting point.

Also remember this: many treadmill reviews still carry a hint of bias with them, as many of the raters carried some predetermined beliefs about particular machines before testing them. Therefore, while using these treadmill reviews as a guideline for your purchase decision, don’t even let them be the final say. In addition to reading them and testing out the machines yourself, also check with friends and family members who may have a treadmill, and find out which they prefer.

Often times, they will have been using a particular machine for quite some time, and therefore can give you an accurate description of the kind of reliability you can expect. Do your research, read many treadmill reviews, find the right treadmill for you, and watch your health start to improve immediately.

Treadmill Reviews – 4 Sources of Quality Treadmill Reviews to Look at Before You Buy

Most buyers read treadmill reviews before buying a home treadmill. Reading these reviews can give you an overall picture of which treadmill is the best choice for you. It can also give you a heads-up about possible problems with a treadmill – or tell you a few added benefits that the treadmill manufacturer did not list.

But where do you find them? And what do you need to know in addition to reading these reviews?

This article will give you 4 high quality sources of treadmill reviews – along with what you also need to know before making your final choice.

First of all – you deserve a lot of credit. Taking the time to research your treadmill is a smart investment of your time. There are over 30 treadmill brands out there – with each brand producing from 3 – 10 different models. Plus most brands bring out new models each year.

So you have a lot of choices.

And some are better than others. Taking the time to research your treadmill means you’ll get a better deal – and probably feel more confident in your decision. There are several ‘hidden gems’ out there that can only be found by reviewing your options.

So where can you read treadmill reviews?

First of all there are the treadmill ratings done once a year by magazines like Consumer Reports, Runner’s World and other quality fitness magazines. These can be helpful in choosing a well-made design and strong brand. These reviews however are sometimes not as detailed as others and further research is definitely recommended.

Also these only come out once a year – usually around January, so it can be hard to find them at other times of the year.

You can also read user reviews at sites like epinions or amazon. These can be excellent since (most of them) are written by real people who have bought and used the treadmill. You’ll get various opinions on how the treadmill holds up over the long run and you can even get tips on things like assembly and setting up the treadmill.

Keep in mind that most of the reviews – especially on epinions – are of older models – so if you’re looking to buy the latest treadmill model, there may not be any reviews. And if you find a treadmill you like with lots of great reviews – you might not be able to find it in stores anymore since it’s been discontinued.

User reviews on these sites can also be quite scary. Human nature being what it is, people are more likely to complain and leave negative reviews than positive reviews. So while there may be 100 people who love that particular treadmill, they probably won’t leave reviews. And the 2 that had a bad experience will post the gruesome details for all to read.

A third source for reviews is the manufacturers or treadmill stores online. Some of these sellers are now getting smart and posting user treadmill reviews on their websites. While some people question the validity of these reviews, if you read them, many do sound like they are written by real people.

So again, while they aren’t the only source of your treadmill research, these reviews can still help you get an overall idea of the treadmill quality.

There are also several websites that are devoted to helping people review and compare treadmills. For example, the website I write for gives the strengths and weaknesses of different treadmill brands and models. There are also lists of current treadmills prices and ratings so people can compare the latest models at a glance.

Another advantage is that manufacturers sometimes send out exclusive coupons and promo codes to these sites. So visitors can not only review the treadmills, they can get a discount on them as well.

Again however, these sites are opinion based and can sometimes be out of date since some manufacturers change their models frequently. So you still need take it as only one part of your buying research.

So those are 4 sources of treadmill reviews and ratings. All of them can be valuable ways to help find the best treadmill for you.

Keep in mind that while reviews are valuable, it’s also important to know what you personally need in a treadmill. For instance, you may need a treadmill that is extra compact or that folds up since you live in a condo or have a small exercise space.

You may plan to run regularly on a treadmill – so you need a solid, well built design with a stable base and strong deck that doesn’t shake or wobble when you pick up the pace. You may want the latest models with Wi-Fi connectivity so you can download new workouts from the Internet.

By taking the time to research what’s out there, you’re way ahead of most buyers. And you’ll also find a much better machine that gets you excited about using it.
