How Treadmills Work?
The invention of the treadmill has helped millions of people to jog indoors. On a treadmill a person can walk, jog and run on different modes. A person can get all kinds of outdoor experiences with a single machine. And more importantly it fits into a room.
Lets talk about how it works. It has a cushioning belt, a platform, a motor and a wide range of features. We can direct its speed to increase or decrease.
The cushioning belt is around 18 inches wide and 48 inches long. A tall person requires a belt of at least 20 inches width and 54 inches length. This should be very comfortable. Because on this belt you jog, walk and run.
The matching motor, which rolls the belt, is another basic part of the treadmill. A standard motor should have 1.5 horsepower. A very good motor is around 2 horsepower. You can alter the speed of the motor according to your requirements. This kind of motor can work for hours and remains workable for years.
Incline is another important part of the treadmill. By making the treadmill inclined you can do calf workout and other cardiovascular exercises.
The monitor displays various current stats of the machine as well as the body. It shows time, body temperature, pulse rate, heart rate etc. Through the monitor we can use various features and control the speed of the treadmill.

An Inside Look At Consumer Reports On Treadmills
Consumer reports on treadmills put out titles like the Best Foldable Treadmill, Budget Treadmill for Walking, Best Treadmills for Heavy Runners and Professionals, and Highest Incline based on reviews included in publications like Consumer Reports, Runner, and Prevention Magazine. In an age where many treadmills on the market offer amenities like TV remote control holders and adapters for IPODS and DVD players, according to a consumer report on treadmills, the most important system components are a heart rate monitor, push-button controls, and wide, flat foot rails.
Most treadmills are priced in the three hundred to one thousand dollar range. According to treadmill research, cheaper machines offer shorter warranties and are notorious for not performing as well in field tests as their pricer counterparts. When it comes to price tags, the Sole F63 has been toted by a Consumer Search consumer report on treadmills as the Best Value for a Folding Treadmill. The Sole’s motor has a twenty year warranty, while there is a three year warranty on parts, and one year warranty protection for repair. The folding treadmill can hold up to three hundred twenty-five pounds, and it’s surface for running is longer than most other beginner treadmills measuring in at fifty by twenty inches. The Sole F63 offers users six workout programs to choose from, in addition to speed and incline control features and an armrest. The machine retails at approximately one thousand dollars.
The same consumer report on treadmills dubbed the Smooth 6.25 Treadmill as it’s Best Mid-Range Treadmill. The unit has a heart-rate monitor embedded into the hand grip and folds up for simple storage. With a weight capacity of two hundred seventy-five pounds, Smooth’s 6.25 model has a lifetime frame and motor warranty. The Smooth 6.25 retails at roughly fifteen hundred dollars.
Fitness giant, Nordictrack is the company attached to the Treadmill with the Highest Incline. Treadmills with a high incline are doted for producing more shapely legs, hips, and muscles, as well as giving the heart a hug. A standard treadmill features an incline that hovers around fifteen percent-the Nordictrack Incline Trainer X5 can be adjusted to an thirty percent angle. The machine has a built-in heart monitor on it’s stocky frame-which can be folded. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is one thousand six hundred dollars.
Consumer Search’s consumer report on treadmills point to the PaceMaster Gold Elite as the Best Treadmill for Running. The PaceMaster Gold Elite retails for approximately two thousand two hundred dollars. The treadmill earned it’s title as a result of it’s sturdy structure and four hundred pound weight capacity. With a running surface spanning sixty by twenty inches, the PaceMaster Gold Elite enjoys a fan base among serious runners. The machine sports nine levels of intensity and a motor with three point oh horsepower. The Gold Elite is available in both folding and unfolding models.
The Landice L7 Pro Sport Trainer is the Best Treadmill for Heavy Runners, according to Consumer Search’s annual consumer report on treadmills. Professionals compare Landice’s L7 Pro Sport model, which sells for nearly three thousand dollars, as the closet home remedy to a commercial treadmill. The machine has a weight capacity of four hundred pounds and comes with a lifetime warranty on all it’s parts. This treadmill requires lots of space as a result of the stability of it’s footplate.

Used Treadmills
Treadmills are very effective exercise equipment, but they can be quite expensive. People who have tight budgets but still want the convenience of a treadmill at home could opt for a used treadmill.
There are many people who buy quality treadmills and then find that they do not have the time or inclination to work out. Such treadmills often find their way to used treadmill stores. Such treadmills may be hardly used at all yet can be found at dirt-cheap rates. Used treadmill sellers also tweak their treadmills a little and refurbish them, so that the resold product is sometimes better than the original one.
Used treadmills can be found in stores that sell used exercise equipment, but most used treadmill sales take place over the Internet. Sometimes gyms and health clubs may sell their old treadmills when they plan to renovate. These treadmills are usually the best. Treadmills used in gyms and health clubs are sturdier and more heavy-duty than home treadmills. Even though they may have been used for a couple of years, treadmills from such facilities have a longer lifespan. They also have more features and better quality parts.
While going for a used treadmill, the first thing to check is that the moving parts all function properly. In fact, you must use the treadmill for a couple of minutes to see that everything is in working order. If the treadmill belt moves jerkily, then there is a problem with it. Treadmills also tend to get noisier over time, as their lubrication wears off. Check that the used treadmill you are getting is not too noisy. Stores may use some temporary lubrication to reduce this effect.
If you are buying from a used equipment store, be sure to ask the storekeeper about the history of the treadmill you wish to purchase. An experienced eye can deduce the wear and tear of the treadmill by observing the tread of the belt, the paint on the handrails, the functioning of the console, etc. That brings us to the console. Computer parts of the treadmills are their most sensitive parts. Over time, these may develop defects, and may not function at all. Check each and every feature of the treadmill. Without the console functioning properly, you may not be able to use most of the features of the treadmill.
The price of a used treadmill depends on its age and quality. Be sure to cross-check the current original price of the treadmill you are buying. There should be enough difference in the costs of the new and used treadmills to compensate for its usage. Used treadmill sellers also give short-term warranties. A final word – there is no point buying a used treadmill that is already of a cheap make. If at all you decide to buy a used treadmill, opt for the high-quality products. Cheaper treadmills are less sturdy and may break down within days of installation at your house.

Treadmill Reviews – How To Help Them Help You
Treadmill reviews are undoubtedly a great way to find out the information you need to know about the treadmill you’re thinking of purchasing. Whatever way you look at it, a treadmill is a fairly hefty expense, so you want to be sure that you don’t waste your hard earned money on the wrong one. Treadmill reviews can be the ideal way to help you sort the 24-carat treadmill from the exercise equipment fool’s gold.
Treadmill reviews, however, should not be substituted for your own judgment, because in all reality, the consumer treadmill reviews you will find simply are the judgments of another person, and personal taste and preferences will come into play. Always remember when searching out and reading any treadmill review that the writer, even if they are a professional in the treadmill and exercise equipment field, will have their own agenda to impart, whether this is a simple preference for a certain type of machine, or even shares an affiliation with a particular treadmill manufacturer.
It might be something as simple as their being a professional runner to your being an amateur keep fit enthusiast, but an individual’s often unspoken preferences will result in differences in the treadmill reviews they produce. This is why it is essential before you hunt down any consumer treadmill reviews that you have a firm idea of what your own treadmill requirements are. While there is no harm in becoming convinced of the right treadmill purchase because of another consumer’s heartfelt review, purchasing a treadmill with a feature that the reviews love is little use if it is not a feature you will use. Always read the treadmill reviews with your own needs in mind, and try not to get carried away by the enthusiasm of another treadmill consumer!
So it is important to remember before reading any treadmill review that what you are about to read is the opinion of one love user – this is why it is important also to read as many treadmill reviews as possible. Sometime the very number of treadmill opinions can be overwhelming, and the comments contained in the reviews can seem as different as night and day. Rather than wondering how two treadmill reviews can be so very different, concentrate on drawing out common features from the reviews you read, and try to relate this once again to your own treadmill needs. Did one reviewer hate the lack of heart rate monitor but admit the treadmill was really quiet? Piece together the common information you find in the reviews to create the picture that will help you – that’s how to get the very best from the treadmill reviews.

Treadmill Reviews – Get The Most Value For Your Dollar
As the number one fitness machines available, treadmills are very popular at fitness locations and as home exercise equipment. Most consumers like to read treadmill reviews before they make a purchase in order to get the best value for their money. You may see many brands and models of treadmills advertised on television, but the advertisement may not be entirely accurate. Everything works well on TV, but often doesn’t perform in the same way when you have it at home. The same is true of treadmills, which is why reading treadmill reviews is important.
The best treadmill reviews are consumer reviews. Treadmills have many attractive features and the more expensive the model, the more features you can expect it to have. Through the treadmill reviews written by consumers that have used the machines you gain valuable information as to whether or not these features actually work. For example, if you are a first-time treadmill user, who would you want to pay thousands of dollars for a machine that you may tire of in a few months? Home treadmill reviews give you the names of the best treadmills in a particular price range and will tell you which ones are best for beginners.
According to the latest home treadmill reviews, the Healthrider Treadmills are the most popular because of their innovative features. The same company also manufactures Nordic Track, Reebok, and Weslo, as well as other popular brands. The HealthRider treadmill reviews will show you that this is a reasonably priced piece of fitness equipment and that it also carries a quality warranty on the motor. However, these treadmill reviews also go into details about specific models telling you which ones to avoid. For example, according to home treadmill reviews, the Healthrider S500X! is not a good buy because of the small motor.
With consumer reviews, treadmills have to live up to their reputation. If you buy a treadmill that doesn’t work properly and you don’t receive good service from the manufacturer, you will certainly want to write a review warning others to avoid this model. Consumers are not the only ones who read these reviews as companies regularly review them to see where they can make improvements to the products. Posting treadmill reviews online is one way to get a manufacture’s attention, especially if all your other efforts have failed.
Treadmill reviews are good places to find some independent treadmill information.

Payment Plan Options for Home Treadmills
If you are looking for a treadmill but you think you can’t afford it, consider the many payment plan options that are available to you. Treadmills are available to suit every price range these days, with some models selling for between $500 and $1000. But if you are looking for a top of the line treadmill, you shouldn’t have to look far to find a payment plan to suit your needs.
Bad credit? That probably won’t be a problem, because some retailers will charge your credit card instead of running a check on your credit. You can set up a handful of equal payments, charged automatically to your card each month, and you don’t have to worry about sending in a check or making sure you make the payment on time. It is all automatic, and you can spend less time worrying about paying bills and more time enjoying your new treadmill.
Do you have your heart set on a more expensive model? It should not be difficult for you to find financing on any model you may choose, and the monthly payments on your own treadmill are likely to be lower than the fees you currently pay to join and use your gym.
Once you factor in the gas you spend driving to the gym and the time it takes out of your day, buying a treadmill of your own on a payment plan option will probably wind up SAVING you money. And, so long as you are going to the gym, you are not investing in anything. A treadmill is an investment because the equipment eventually pays for itself. Research will guide you to the best payment plan option for the treadmill that you want.

Top Treadmills Reviewed – A Comparison of Price And Performance
A treadmill can be an excellent exercise machine, providing a convenient and relatively inexpensive way to stay fit. But with over a dozen different manufacturers out there, each with a collection of different styles of equipment, it can be difficult to know which treadmill is best for you.
How much you can spend and what type of exercise you plan to do will help determine which price range and manufacturers are right for you. It is important to research the specific features you need based on whether you plan to walk, jog or do all out running training. But a good place to start is often to get an overview of the manufacturers out there and the cost of a treadmill. Below is an overview of ten of the most popular treadmill models and their general ratings in the industry.
A company called Icon Health and Fitness is perhaps the largest and most well known treadmill manufacturer in the world. They also make other types of exercise equipment. In the treadmill realm, they produce Reebok, NordicTrack, Weslo, Proform and Image brands. All five of these rank among the most popular and offer consumers a range or prices and options.
Weslo
Of all the Icon brands, Weslo treadmills are the least expensive, and in fact are typically the lowest priced of any treadmill regardless of manufacturer. They are entry-level machines intended for use by beginners and walkers that do not engage in a more demanding workout. They lack the power of more expensive brands and are built with smaller running areas. And warranties are typically no longer than 90 days.
In the Weslo line, the Weslo 400 CS treadmill sells for under $400. It is consistently picked as one of the top budget treadmill models.
For those interested in a bit more advanced treadmill, the Weslo EX18 sells for $500 but can be hard to find. It is worth the search though as it is perhaps the best Weslo model and will provide a good machine for the beginner or walker on a budget.
Image
Image is another brand of treadmill produced by Icon Fitness. This line is slightly more expensive than Weslo, but is still considered a budget machine, typically selling for under $1000. Many experts feel that Image treadmills offer the best value for the average person. The only drawback is the warranty, which is only 90 days on many Image models.
The Image 1200 treadmill has a 2.0 hp continuous duty motor that provides a maximum speed of 10 mph. The platform can adjust to inclines from 0-10%. It is a great choice for those runners on a bit of a budget and for those who want to spend $1000 or less. The Image 10.6QL was ranked among the top five treadmills by U.S. Consumer Reports. It has six programmable workouts and also allows you to determine your speed and incline based on a heart rate monitor. It is IFIT compatible, which means you can connect to the Internet to access online workouts. It costs around $1400 and is folding for convenient storage.
Proform
Proform treadmills by Icon provide shoppers with perhaps the most comprehensive options in exercise equipment. Budget models start at $400 and the overwhelming selection continues up the spectrum to several mid priced models that fall in the $1000 to $2000 range. The Proform 795SL treadmill sells for under $1000 and is often a top pick among consumers and fitness experts. The LX 660 sells for under $600 and has plenty of features for a budget treadmill. Like many of the budget treadmills, Proforms often have a less than stellar warranty, typically 90 days.
NordicTrack
There are literally dozens of different NordicTrack treadmill models produced by Icon. They range in price from around $800 for a NordicTrack C1800 to $2000 for a 7500R model. Many fitness experts feel that consumers spend a bit more for the name brand when they purchase a Nordictrack treadmill. The machines often look very nice but may not always offer the best buy as some people have experienced problems with reliability. All models typically come with a heart rate monitor, but some of the less expensive models offer a 1.5 hp motor and a smaller platform, often around 50″.
On the plus side, NordicTrack treadmills often offer good cushioning for those who don’t want to replicate the uneven, jolting conditions of a true road workout. Their 3-2-1 warranty covers the motor for three years, the frame and other parts for two years and all labor charges for one year.
The NordicTrack Teton, which sells for just under $1500 and is a great choice for incline training and hiking. The Apex 5100i, which sells for around $1700 is also a popular choice.
Reebok
Reebok treadmills also depend on name recognition to help attract buyers. Models often look nice and have plenty of features but have been known to be less durable than other brands. It is important to note that Reebok home treadmills are not made by the same company as the commercial models found in fitness clubs.
A plus side of the Reebok treadmills is the warranty. On most models the frame is covered for a lifetime, the belt and deck and all electrical and mechanical components for 2 years, and labor for 12 months. The motor typically has a 2-3 year guarantee. One of the most popular Reebok models is the ACD4, which sells for around $1700.
Smooth
Another treadmill manufacturer that is making a name for itself recently is Smooth. This company’s biggest marketing appeal is that they sell their treadmills direct to the consumer over the Internet on their company website. They claim this allows them to reduce prices, and in fact, many models run less than comparative treadmills offered by other manufacturers.
All Smooth treadmills have a 10-year warranty on the motor and 12-month labor warranty. Other parts such as the belt, deck and electronic components it typically covered from 2 to 5 years. This protection makes Smooth treadmills an appealing buy to those who have had problems with previous equipment or simply don’t like to be stuck fixing things.
Smooth treadmills often rank at the top of their respective price band listings. Many experts choose them for their excellent features and reasonable price. The Smooth 5.0P has a 2.5 hp motor and 9 preset programs. It has been called the best treadmill on the market for overall value. At just under $2000, the Smooth 7.1HR is a popular model for those who require a bit more advanced model. Both units fold for storage.
Trimline
Trimline is another popular brand of home treadmills. They are often compared to Smooth equipment and have a longer warranty but a higher price tag. In some instances, experts feel the expense is justified, while in other models it is not. Trimline offers six folding models and three non-folding. The Trimline 1610, which sells for around $1000 has been recommended as a good starter machine. And the Trimline 7200 remains a top seller despite the price increase that puts it over $2000.
Keys
Keys Fitness is a relative newcomer to the treadmill industry, getting its start in 1997. They have shown improvements in quality and features each year and are known to offer a competitive product in the low to mid priced treadmills. They offer a 10-year warranty on their motors, 2 years parts and electronics, and 1 year on service. They are often said to be comparable to Smooth in price and features. The Keys 1200 is a nice standard treadmill that sells for just over $1000. The 8800 HR model is more heavy duty with a bigger motor and platform and a higher price of over $2000.
Spirit
Spirit is a treadmill company that has been around for over 20 years. They are usually known for leading the industry in new features. If something different or innovative comes out, chances are Spirit was the one to introduce it. Although their SL 188 is priced below $1000, and is a good buy at that price, the majority of their models are in the mid price range of $1500 up to $3000 plus. Spirit treadmills often have good warranties and solid quality.
Landice
Landice is often considered the top of the line in treadmills. The usually cost over $3000 and at this price, you get some great features, heavy duty motors, and a lifetime warranty on parts. If you have the money and are serious about your training, any of the Landice models, either in the L7 or L8 series, provide quality options.
Cybex
Cybex is another manufacturer that produces high end treadmills. Formerly known as Trotter, the treadmills produced by this company have high quality and prices to match. Again, it is more a matter of which one fits your needs because at this price you’d better be getting a good machine. The Cybex 300T, which sells for $3000 and the Trotter Elite, which costs nearly $4500 are two options.
As these comparisons show, budget will be a starting point in selecting a home treadmill, as will the way in which you plan to use the machine. While for the most part you get what you pay for, fitness experts caution that name brand treadmills aren’t necessarily better than less well-known equipment. Check the warranty, check the features, and most importantly, check with people who have owned the treadmills or do repairs on fitness equipment. With so much information available, making an informed decision is easy. It’s actually sticking to your exercise routine that will be the tough part.

Ironman Treadmills
Ironman Treadmills – For The Guy Who Does The Ironing
Ironman Treadmills are produced by Keys Fitness Products, which also produces Keys, Alliance, Discovery, Healthtrainer, and Encore treadmills. Ironman treadmill models are in two series, the newer Ironman T Series and the substantial Ironman M Series.
The Ironman Triad, a very recent model made exclusively for Costco, the discount retailer, combines features of both machines.
The two Ironman Series include models more suited for general fitness and health conditioning, like the t150, t220, t320 and the m2, m3, and m4, but they also include heavy weight machines like the m5, which, like the other models listed, folds away, and the m6, which has a conventional frame for greater stability in training.
Ironman prices its treadmills from under $1000 to around $2000.
A Full Range Of Choices
The Ironman Triad treadmill has the modern design of the T Series but shares features with the M5, judged a Best Buy in at least one online review.
Its weight capacity is that of the M5, 375 lbs, but its motor–3.0CHP, maximum speed (10MPH), Touch Button controls, remote controls, heart rate monitoring and control, and number of preset, customized, and heart rate programs, fifteen, are all like the M6.
Unlike the rest of the M Series which incline to 12%, however, the Triad inclines to only 10%.
The Triad running surface actually exceeds that of the M6 in length at 60″.
Ironman treadmill models carry a warranty that covers for lifetime on the frame, 10-years on the motor, two-years on parts and one-year on labor.
The Ironman Triad sells for about $1400, occasionally discounted by Costco.
Those who review treadmills generally rate Ironman very good.
See Consumer Reports review in January 2005 for a look at the M4, and some point out the excellent value found in the M5, see the TreadmillDoctor.
