Elliptical Exercise Machine : 3 Different Designs – Which is Best?

Buying an elliptical? Elliptical exercise machines used to be simple. Precor introduced the first one back in the 1990s and other fitness brands like NordicTrack, Proform and Schwinn followed with more affordable home versions.

If you’re buying an elliptical today, you’ll notice that you have a lot of options. One of the main options you have is which style or design of elliptical you want.

Elliptical exercise machines offer 3 general designs: Front drive, rear drive and center drive. Which one is best?

Here’s a brief overview of each so you can decide which best suits you:

#1 Rear Drive – As the name states, this design puts the flywheel in the rear – behind the foot pedals. This was the first design originally introduced by Precor. However many brands now produce this design including Nordictrack and Smooth.

Rear drive ellipticals tend to give you a flatter elliptical motion – kind of like a running feel. According to some reports rear drive models also give more inertia behind the user, although I can’t really feel this myself.

#2 Front Drive – This design came later into the marketplace and places the flywheel in front of the foot pedals. This design tends to give you a more climbing or inclined feel to the elliptical motion.

Front drive, like rear drive, is also quite popular among many different brands. Brands that produce machines with this design include Sole and Schwinn.

#3 Center Drive – This is a newer design in the home market. Instead of one large flywheel in front or back, there are 2 smaller flywheels on the side of the user footpedals.

Advantages to this design (besides just looking cool) are that these machines take up less space than the 2 other designs. They also tend to hold the user more upright with the footpedals closer together, which for many people feels more natural.

On the other hand, in my mind at least, 2 smaller flywheels vs 1 means double the objects that can break on my elliptical.

Plus these ellipticals are not as easy to find as the other 2 models. NordicTrack makes a few. But the most popular brand that used to make them – Ironman – wouldn’t be a great choice since their parent company – Keys Fitness – declared bankruptcy.

So which one is the best design?

Well it really depends on you. For example if you have a small workout space you may want a center drive elliptical (or you could also just opt for a folding front drive elliptical). If you prefer a flatter feeling, running type motion, you may want a rear drive machine.

However keep in mind that design isn’t the only thing that contributes to a smooth, stable elliptical. Other features to look at include stride length, user weight capacity, proper ergonomic design and the quality of construction.

Keep these things in mind while searching for your elliptical exercise machine. Take your time and you’re guaranteed to find one you’ll enjoy using for years to come.

How To Choose A Home Gym

Certain home exercising machines come in varying sizes therefore you need to consider where will you be placing the gym. Your home gym is going to be delivered by truck and driver will not actually help you move the gym into the place you intend the gym to be. In case you live in an house and plan on placing it in an upstairs room you you should be positive it will go upstairs without problems. What you need to consider is the weight of the gym as well. Some home gyms come with free weights and weighted bars and can be over 500lbs. Be sure to take measurements, make plan about where you’ll fit the home gym and prepare everything to move the home gym into its permanent location.

When we purchase a exercising machine some assembly is going to be required once the gym is at your room. The amount of assembly and the ease of assembly is not always known. Check dealer about how many hours of assembly will be required and what level of mechanical skill will be needed. If you can get your father to come over for few hours and help you to assemble the gym, that’s great. But asking the best questions before purchase might save you precious time once the gym arrives at your house. Great number of gyms require very little assembly.

It is not important what exercising machine you buy it is going to take some time to get familiar to all the options that home gym performs. Various home gyms comes with a dozen or even two dozen different exercise options which is great but it you will get hang of them from the home gym manual. The ease of learning to utilize the gym can mean you will be enjoying and having results before. Take care that you can simply understand fully in what way to use your gym to avoid injury and achieve desired outcomes.

Obviously you have certain goals in mind since we decided to buy a home gym, now we should be certain the machine has the right stuff for you to realize those goals. But if the goals are simple and straight forward like more leg strength, great number of home gyms will be ideal for reaching that type of goal. Inquire from the dealer or acquire a brochure that lists the options a certain gym is equipped with. If your goals are a a bit advanced you should want to look at a free weight home gym with higher weight levels to be in condition to support your changing fitness goals.

Good purchase of a exercising machine is going to need an investment of your money. We all want the gym to be durable and for it to work properly as it was planned. Always check to make sure the craftsmanship of the design is such that you can be trustful with the gym. Nicely constructed and well designed exercising machine must be able to provide years of usage to the buyer. Read reviews of as many home gyms as you can made by actual owners or consumer reports and give just as much consideration of design towards buying your exercising machine as you would your new vehicle.

Strength Training Versus Aerobics – What is the Difference?

If you are looking for a total body workout, you want to combine strength training and aerobics. These are two very different types of exercise but the work together to turn your body into a finely tuned machine. Weight training will tone your muscles, making you stronger while aerobics will make your heart and lungs stronger, giving you more stamina while burning the fat. These two disciplines of exercise work best when you combine them with a sensible, sound nutritional plan. When you combine good nutrition, strength training and aerobics you can get the body you have always wanted.

Strength Training

Strength training is typically weight bearing exercise or resistance training. It does just what the title suggests, it builds strength. Weight lifting and exercise machines are examples of strength training devices. However, pilates and yoga can also be methods of strength training. You don’t necessarily have to hold free weights to use a machine to strength train. You can use the weight of your own body to provide resistance and increase your strength.

It is a good practice to strength train one set of muscles (such as the upper body) one day and another set (such as the lower body) the next. Most muscle groups need time to rest and recover after exercise. So while you can work out every day, you should work out different muscle groups each day to give worked muscles time to rest and repair. This will give you optimal results.

Aerobics

Aerobics is a cardio exercise that gets your heart rate up and keeps it up. This can be anything from walking to riding a bike. You can run on a treadmill or take an aerobics class. If it gets your heart rate up, it is an aerobic activity. You generally move a lot during aerobic exercise.

You can do aerobic exercises every day because they do not focus on specific muscle groups. Where strength training makes you strong, aerobics makes you lean. It also strengthens your heart and respiratory system, giving you increased stamina. With regular aerobic exercise, you will find that you can run faster and longer as well as perform better.

Interval Training

Interval training is a combination of weight training and aerobics and is attributed to effective weight loss and conditioning. During interval training, you do your regular weight training, but intersperse with brief spurts of aerobic exercise. For instance, you do a set of curls, then walk on the treadmill for five minutes. Next, you do a bench press and then ride a bike for seven minutes. In short, you do an aerobic activity such as jumping rope, walking on the treadmill, running or riding a bike for short bursts in between each set of weights or nautilis machines.

Interval training is very popular among athletes because it builds stamina and strength. With people who want to lose weight, it can bring about fantastic results. Interval training utilizes the best results of strength training and aerobics.

What is a Total Body Workout?

A total body workout involves both strength training and aerobic exercise so that your entire body is worked. You get the benefits of being stronger as well as having enhanced endurance. A typical total body workout consists of working one muscle group (such as the upper body) for thirty minutes or so a day three times a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday, then the other muscle group (such as the lower body) for thirty minutes or so three times a week – Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Aerobic activity is practices every day for about thirty minutes. Some workouts differ in times, some go longer and some are shorter, but that is the basic total body workout.

Nutrition

If you are working your body with strength training and aerobics, you need to have the proper nutrition to fuel your body so that is can perform at an optimum level. You should eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats. You need a lot of protein to fuel your muscles, muscle growth and loss of fat. The various fruits and vegetables give you the vitamins and minerals that you need. Whole grains like brown rice and quinoa also offer protein, fiber and minerals. If you are training intensively you may find that you need nutritional supplements. This is very common for people who train vigorously.

There are specific differences between strength training and aerobics. Actually, these two types of exercise work together to form a total body workout. When you combine the two you will find that you body is stronger, leaner and have better stamina. If you want to tune your body to an optimal level, strength training and aerobic activity are the way to accomplish it.

Creating Energy Witih Pagan Jewelry

Since time immemorial, humankind has been wearing jewelry to symbolically represent Deity, to reflect spirituality and belief, to attract good fortune, to avert negative energies and to enhance worship. This age old pagan custom is still practiced across all cultures and religions today.

Most pagans make a clear distinction between jewelry for every day wear and those worn for ritual purposes only. As is the case with all ritual items, jewelry too is cleansed, consecrated and charged to serve a specific purpose or goal. These pieces gain power over time, a power that would be diminished if worn as a fashion accessory.

The traditional types of ritual jewelry worn by pagans are necklaces, bracelets, rings, garters, moon crowns and horned helmets.

Necklaces

Ancient Goddess statues frequently depict the Lady wearing a necklace. This association makes the necklace a very important ritual piece and wearing one during ritual is symbolic of the attachment to Her. The design of the necklaces can vary greatly, depending on the tradition, the coven or the group:

Single strand necklaces made up from natural materials such as crystals, seashells, acorns etc. Interestingly, fashioning a necklace from acorns is representative of both the God and the Goddess. The God’s tree is the Oak whilst the acorn, as the ancient symbol of fertility, belongs to the realm of the Goddess.

Symbols fashioned into pendants and suspended from neck chains, string or even thin leather strips are very popular. The metal used for the pendant could be silver, to represent the Goddess; Gold to represent the God; or a mixture of silver and gold to either represent the union of Goddess and God or the polarity of the Goddess and God.

Bracelets

Bracelets, like necklaces, can be fashioned from natural beads, silver or gold and could be adorned with symbols to serve as magickal amulets. In some traditions, female pagans wear copper bracelets to attune with the solar energies of the Lady or the Lord.

Rings

Rings, in the vast majority of traditions, are optional. The type of ring and the reason for wearing a ring remain personal to the wearer. A pagan working with moon energies during a full moon ritual may for example choose to wear a ring in which moonstone is set to attune with these energies. Some minority groups do not encourage the wearing of rings at all as they believe it interferes with the flow of energy through the hands.

Types of Hamsters

There are 5 types of hamsters.  These are the Syrian hamster, Dwarf Campbell Russian Hamster, Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamster, Chinese Hamster and the Roborovski Hamster.

Syrian Hamster

The Syrian Hamster lives alone in the wild and it feels much happier when it’s alone in captivity too.  Syrian Hamsters can be aggressive with each other and can seriously hurt each other.  Never keep Syrian Hamsters in a pair or a group.  Syrian Hamsters are the most commonly found in pet stores.  The Syrian Hamster is sometimes referred to as the ‘Golden Hamster’ due to its original wild golden colouring although today there are many different colour and coat mutations. It is also sometimes referred to as the Standard or Fancy Hamster and Long Haired Syrian hamsters are sometimes referred to as ‘Teddy Bear Hamsters’.  Female Syrian Hamsters are larger than male Syrian Hamsters.

Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamster

The Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamster is also known as the Djungarian Dwarf Hamster.  It originates from the steppes of Northern Kazakhstan and Siberia.  When kept outdoors it gets a white winter coat.  This is a natural protective colour during a period when its original habitat is covered in snow. Hamsters are most comfortable at temperatures between 65 ° F / 18° C and 80°F / 26°C and should always be housed indoors.  Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamsters can be housed in a group, preferably of the same gender.  They can only be housed in groups if brought together from a young age.

Dwarf Campbell Russian Hamster

Dwarf Campbell Russian Hamsters are closely related to Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamsters.  Because of its thicker coat, the Campbell’s appears somewhat larger than Dwarf Russian Hamsters, but in fact it’s not. Campbell’s tend to become fatter in captivity than the Russian Hamsters.  The Campbell’s coat is yellow-brownish with a thin, sharply lined dorsal stripe.  Its coat turns slightly greyer in winter.  Dwarf Campbell Russian Hamsters can live in groups of the same gender.

Chinese Hamster

The Chinese Hamster is a long-tailed dwarf hamster and not closely related to the other dwarf hamsters.  Chinese hamsters should also be housed alone; one per cage.  The Chinese Hamster’s coat is not as woolly as that of the other species.  Its fur lies close and dark-brown dorsal stripe on its back is not always clearly visible and its belly is light grey.  The Chinese Hamster has dark ears, lightly edged.  The male has a strikingly large *******.

Roborovski Hamster

The Roborovski Hamster is also a short-tailed dwarf hamster, but its yellow-brown colouring and striking whiskers lend it a totally different appearance to the other two short-tailed species of dwarf hamsters.  Roborovski Hamsters are much less well knows and they breed very few young.  The Roborovski Hamster.  Is the smallest dwarf hamster.  Its body measures only seven to nine centimeters in length and its tail is barely visible.  Its back is a brownish-yellow with grey under colouring.  Sometimes the yellow on its back appears somewhat rusty in colour.  Roborovski Hamsters don’t have dorsal stripes.  Roborovski Hamsters can live in groups of the same gender.

Adult Bed Wetting – What Is The Solution?

Adult bed wetting is a common problem as you can see from all the TV ads about bedwetting disposable diapers available for adults. The first thing for adults to do when they have a bed-wetting problem is to consult with a doctor to make sure that there is nothing medically wrong to cause this problem to develop. Bedwetting in the adult years can be a symptom of diabetes, kidney or bladder problems or something as simple as a urinary tract infection, for which there are antibiotics. Even though disposable diapers do help adults feel more comfortable, adult bed wetting does need to be checked out.

Allergies, cell anemia, and sleep disorders are also causes for adult bed wetting. Researchers dealing with this problem have also found psychological factors to be involved, such as stress and trauma. In some cases, age is the culprit as the muscles of the bladder start to lose their elasticity causing adult bed-wetting. Enuresis alarms work just as well for adults as they do for children and teenagers. These alarms wake you up out of your sleep at the first sign of moisture so that you do have time to get to the bathroom instead of wetting the bed.

There are medications that have proven effective in controlling adult bed wetting. One of these is DDAVP, which helps to reduce the amount of urine that the body makes at night. Adults who drink a lot of liquids may have to use the bathroom more at night and if they take medication for insomnia, then they might find it hard to wake up when they need to. This medication helps to treat the symptoms of adult bed-wetting, which means that you will not urinate as often during the night. However, this is not a cure for adult bedwetting. It is mainly a measure to control it. Once you stop taking the medication, bedwetting will start again.

You do not necessarily need to take DDAVP every day in order for it to control adult bed wetting. You can either take this as pill or a spray, but a cold or a stuffy nose is likely to interfere with the action of the medication taken in spray form. You do have to take the medication at night and it does have side effects, which some adults are unable to handle. The common side effects of this adult bedwetting medication include headache, nausea, sinus problems and nosebleeds. When you are taking this medication you are not allowed to drink any water after taking it.

For adults, Imipramine is an anti-depressant drug that has been found effective in treating adult bed wetting. Like DDAVP, this reduces the amount of urine the body produces during the night. However, most doctors do not like to prescribe this medication because of its many side effects. In fact prescribing medication for adult bedwetting is usually the last resort. Doctors prefer to try methods of behavior modification first and if the adult is comfortable, disposable diapers keep the bed sheets dry at night. Adult bed wetting is a problem that doctors are well used to dealing with, so there is no need for embarrassment when deciding to talk to a doctor about your problem.

When Hamsters Attack – Understanding Hamster Interaction

Hamsters, as a rule, are very territorial creatures, with some being far more aggressive to other hamsters than others. Syrian hamsters are a good example – never ever put two Syrian hamsters in a cage together unless you want to scoop out a dead hamster the next morning. Dwarf hamsters can be housed together, but it’s a good idea to know how hamsters behave when interacting with each other so you can identify the warning signs of things possibly taking a turn for the worse.

Hamsters rely a great deal on body language to convey information or messages to other hamsters. Just as you or I would read hand wringing as a sign of nervousness or foot tapping as a sign of restlessness, hamsters read subtle body messages as signs of anger, anxiety, or pleasure from the actions of other hamsters.

Hamsters that have never met before can identify each other and their *** by sniffing a scent gland located just behind the ear. Hamsters that are related to each other take far less time to identify each other than they do strange hamsters, thus lending evidence to the theory that each hamster has a unique identifying scent. When two male hamsters meet and sniff, the subordinate hamster will turn and leave, while a female hamster in heat will, upon meeting and sniffing a male, turn and present her rear to the lucky male.

Being fiercely territorial creatures, hamsters spend a lot of time measuring each other up to see which is the dominant animal. They do so by sniffing another scent gland located at their midsection, forming a ‘T’, with each hamster taking turns sniffing. The subordinate hamster sometimes ends up on his rear legs due to aggressive sniffing on the part of the dominant hamster. If this occurs then the dominant hamster may seize the opportunity to do some damage by biting at the exposed stomach of the subordinate hamster. The attacked hamster at this point has two choices – surrender or fight.

If the subordinate hamster doesn’t feel like testing his luck he can indicate his surrender by holding out one of his paws in front of him and avoiding eye contact. If this doesn’t work then the two hamsters will enter the first phase of combat, called rolling fighting. This is basically some intense wrestling with a few bites at the midsection for good measure. A hamster can admit defeat at this point by rolling over on his back. However any fighting that continues past this point becomes very serious.

Any hamsters still fighting at this point are in it to do some serious damage to each other. In the wild a beaten hamster can attempt to flee, but in a confined space such as a cage the hamsters will fight until one has torn the other to shreds. Attempting to pull them apart with your bare hands will get you nothing other than badly bitten fingers – your best bet at this point would be to spray the hamsters with a water bottle and separate them while they’re recovering from the soaking. Wear gloves or else you could still receive a nasty bite.

How to Choose an Online Pharmacy

It seems these days that it has never been easier to obtain non prescription medicines & with the advent of the online pharmacy the process has become even easier. In the US they can provide an online consultation & service all from the comfort of your own home or office PC. No medical examinations are necessary & your privacy is guaranteed.

For certain medical conditions an online pharmacy may offer online doctor consultations with treatment & recommendations.

As more & more people turn to the internet for information on a wide range of topics it seems that medical & health information is a popular search topic. All kinds of medical organisations, including many government organisations, use the internet to provide the general public with health & medical information & advice. The advent of the online pharmacy could be seen as a natural compliment to all of this information.

They are particularly useful for information & advice about so called “embarrassment conditions” where people would rather consult a computer than deal face to face with another person about a problem they might have which they find themselves too embarrassed to talk about. Some of the most popular medicines purchased include; viagra for erectile dysfunction, propecia for hair loss & xenical for obesity.

When choosing an online pharmacy you should check to see that they meet the stringent safety standards of your home country. In the US the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) police the industry although the very nature of the internet makes this a difficult task. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) also has a role to play as it enforces consumer protection in the US & acts to make sure companies does not make false claims about their products or services. However many websites outside the US claim to be up to 50% cheaper than those in the US & therefore many people choose to use a website based outside the US there is nothing the FDA or FTC can do to police them.

In the UK the MHRA (Medical & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) is the equivalent of the US FDA & regulates all drugs & medicines sold in the UK. Also the EMEA (European Medicines Evaluation Agency)evaluates new products sold within the EU (European Union). Any medicine approved by the EMEA can be sold throughout the Europe.

You should treat an online pharmacy like you would any other online business, make sure they have an address & phone number should you have a problem need to get in touch & only pay through secure payment methods.

Whilst an online pharmacy cannot & indeed will not claim to be able to replace your health professional for consultation and advice they are undoubtedly a useful addition to the medical treatment armoury at your disposal. They are available 24 hours a day 365 days of the year so used wisely you may wonder what you ever did without one.

Exercise Bike Buying Guide

Buying an exercise bike? An exercise bike is an excellent way to build fitness, lose weight and get fit. Plus they’re convenient and one of the most comfortable to burn calories in the comfort of your own home.

But how do you choose the best one? This buying guide will show you what to look for when shopping so you can find the best exercise bike for your needs – while avoiding the lemons!

First, ask yourself which class of exercise bike you would like. There are 2 general classes of exercise bikes:

1) Recumbent Bikes

Recumbent bikes are the newer exercise bikes on the market with the chair-like or bucket seats. Your body is placed in a semi reclining position and your legs angle out in front of you to reach the pedals instead of hanging down as on an upright bike.

2) Upright Bikes

These are also called “Stationary bikes” although this term is now becoming a catch all term for both upright and recumbent bikes. These are the traditional exercise bikes that have been around for years and are similar in form to traditional outdoor bikes.

An offshoot of the standard upright bike is the ‘Dual Action’ Stationary bike. These bikes have movable bars or levers on arm handles to incorporate your upper body into the workout.

Know what you want before you start comparing different exercise bikes. Personally I’ve owned both and after a while upright exercise bike seats just don’t feel too comfortable if you know what I mean. But the choice is yours.

The next thing you need to decide on is your budget. How much are you willing to pay for your exercise bike?

There are really 3 price categories:

1) Under $500

2) Between $500 – 1000

3) $1000 +

Under $500: While there are some above average exercise bikes under $500, don’t expect to get a top quality machine for this price. If you don’t plan on using your exercise cycle much or if you’re on a budget, this may be a good price point for you.

Between $500 – $1000: Unlike treadmills or elliptical trainers, you can usually get a very solid, higher quality exercise bike for your home in this category.

Most exercise bikes in this category offer magnetic resistance and high grade consoles that give you feedback on your workout. You should also expect several built-in workout programs, foot straps and heart rate monitors.

$1000 +: These exercise bikes are either the cream of the crop for the advanced home exerciser or they are commercial grade for the health club. Examples of bikes in this category include spinners and commercial bikes like Life Cycle, Kettler and Star Trac.

Always remember that with exercise bikes – in general – you do get what you pay for so try to spend the most that you can and get a high quality machine that will last you.

These are really the 2 most important features to decide on: the type of bike and the price you can afford. Here are a few more features you should know about when choosing an exercise bike.

Resistance

There are several different types of resistance you’ll find in your exercise bike

1) Direct Tension – offers you a manual adjustment of resistance

2) Air – resistance is provided by pedaling against the airflow of a fan blade

3) Magnetic Resistance – this is the most sophisticated type of resistance allowing magnetic currents to create and track the resistance. It generally allows for a greater variety of workout levels.

Magnetic resistance is generally viewed as the best option since it tends to be quieter and provides a more even feel when pedalling.

Workout Options

Most exercise bikes give you information on speed, distance traveled, and time of the workout. The more sophisticated you go, you’ll also find things like total calories and fat burned, resistance level, heart rate and program mode.

You can also get exercise bikes with numerous preprogrammed workouts and information storage as well as iFit compatibility and Interactive Disc players.

It really depends on your personal preferences whether you choose a bike with 10 preset programs and an ultra high tech computer display or one with just a simple display.

However, keep in mind that in general, the higher priced bikes have more sophisticated options and are built with higher quality materials.

Warranty

Exercise Bikes come with a variety of warranties from 90 days to lifetime warranties on different parts of the bike. For example, parts and labor may be covered for 6 months, electronics for 1 year and the frame for a lifetime. In general a longer warranty is indicative of a higher quality machine.

Final Note: It is also important that you decide how much you are planning to use your exercise bike. For example, if you are new to exercising and not sure you’ll use your exercise bike much, you might want to save some money and go with a more economical model.

If however you plan on using the bike a lot and/or are a regular exerciser, invest a bit more and get a machine that will last. Look for a high quality brand that is highly rated and gives you good value for your money.

By keeping these tips in mind when buying your exercise bike, you’re much more likely to find one that best fits your workout needs.
